Gilberto Martinez of Paulsboro NJ died Thursday 19 September. Gilberto was born in Havana, Cuba on 2 December 1933. Upon completion of his primary education he enlisted in the Cuban Navy and was subsequently accepted to the Cuban Naval Academy (pre-Castro), graduated first in his class, and was commissioned Alferez de Fragata (equivalent to an Ensign in the US Navy). After the communist revolution he was the first officer to resign his commission, then went on to teach physics at a preparatory school. While teaching he agreed to join a U.S. backed group intended to overthrow the Cuban government. The group's activities were compromised and Gilberto was found guilty of conspiracy against the Cuban government and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, ultimately serving 11. In 1979, Gilberto and his family immigrated to the US and settled in Northern New Jersey where he worked in the accounting department of several high profile hotels in NYC. Through the years the family also lived in Pennsylvania and Southern NJ, where Gilberto eventually retired. Gilberto is survived by his wife of 44 years, Adelfa, sons Gil (USN- Ret) and Jorge (USCG), and grandchildren Sam, Ben, Sofia and Ava, his brother Mario and sisters Carmen and Mariza. In lieu of flowers the family is asking a donation to the Alzheimer's Association be made in Gilberto's name.
